Govia Thameslink hit with record fine for running ‘ghost trains’ during rail chaos

The rail regulator has slapped a record fine on Britain’s biggest train network for running "ghost trains" and a string of “misinformation” failings during last May’s rail timetable chaos.

Govia Thameslink (GTR) ran empty trains while thousands of passengers were left stranded elsewhere on platforms as their services were cancelled, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) found.

Customers were either prevented from boarding the "ghost trains" or not told about them, leaving them to depart completely empty as other services ground to a halt.
