The Scottish Government has been urged to exempt teachers from its “unpopular and ridiculous” car park tax plan amid fears that it could hit recruitment at a time when schools are already struggling to fill posts.

Under the SNP’s Budget deal with the Greens, councils will be given the power to introduce a workplace parking levy for everywhere except NHS sites.

A similar scheme has been introduced in Nottingham, where teachers and care staff can be asked to fork out between £214 and £624 a year to park at work.

The SNP plan, unveiled by Derek Mackay, the Finance Minister – along with proposals that will see council tax bills rise by almost five per cent – has been condemned by opposition parties…
