Manchester City apologise to Chelsea after playing Blues’ anthem ‘One Step Beyond’

Manchester City bosses apologised to Chelsea after the west London club’s anthem ‘One Step Beyond’ was played after their 6-0 drubbing on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s side tore their opponents to pieces as they returned to the top of the Premier League table.

If the result alone was not hard enough for Chelsea fans to take, exiting the stadium to the sound of Madness and One Step Beyond, a club anthem at Stamford Bridge, compounded the misery.

Chelsea’s humiliating afternoon at Manchester City was made worse after the final whistle

City officials demanded the song be cut short and were quick to apologise to the visitors for what many perceived as an act of gloating.

The song is regularly played after Chelsea win matches at Stamford Bridge and so hearing it after a 6-0 demolition left a bitter taste.

It was swiftly cut short but fans quickly took to social media to hail the person in charge of City’s PA system.

Pep Guardiola’s side were rampant against a below-par Chelsea as they keep pace at the top

WHY DO CHELSEA PLAY THE SONG?

One Step Beyond is a tune written by Jamaican ska singer Prince Buster as a B-side for his single Al Capone. It was made famous by London band Madness who covered it for their debut 1979 album of the same name.

In recent years the tune has been played at Stamford Bridge following high-profile victories; particularly following second leg wins in the UEFA Champions League knock out stages or particularly significant league matches.

Ska music has been popular among much of Chelsea’s support since the 1960s, when the style was introduced from Jamaica.

Another ska tune, The Liquidator, was first played soon after release in the late 1960s, and is currently played as the teams enter the field at Stamford Bridge.

Madness are a band with a close association with Chelsea, with lead singer Graham ‘Suggs’ McPherson and drummer Dan ‘Woody’ Woodgate both being long-time match-going fans.

One twitter user wrote: ‘City trolling Chelsea with One Step Beyond after stuffing them 6-0 was a lovely moment’.

An angry Chelsea supporter suggested if the song is played at Wembley, where the two sides meet in the Carabao Cup final on February 24, he will support Liverpool for the title.

He wrote: ‘If City play One Step Beyond if they beat us at Wembley I’m walking straight out of the stadium into a shop and buying a Liverpool shirt to support them for the rest of the season.’

The humiliation had started long before the Madness track rang through the speakers as Sergio Aguero collected his second successive hat-trick at the Etihad Stadium.

Aguero is in a rich vein of form right now and could have scored more with Chelsea unable to nullify his threat as City were 4-0 up after just 25 minutes.

Raheem Sterling scored the opener after four minutes, a sign that it was going to be a long afternoon for Maurizio Sarri’s side.

Aguero made it 2-0 nine minutes later with a stunning strike from distance and pressure was mounting on Sarri with every goal conceded.

Ilkay Gundogan got in on the act as Guardiola’s side continued to keep the pressure on title rivals Liverpool following their win over Bournemouth at Anfield.

Chelsea now need to haul themselves off the canvas for Thursday’s trip to face Malmo in the Europa League before taking on an in-form Manchester United in the FA Cup.
