Who Chelsea get as manager is irrelevant… the priority is getting Maurizio Sarri out

Maurizio Sarri finds himself on the brink at Chelsea after Sunday’s humiliating 6-0 thrashing by Manchester City.

The Italian has only been in charge at Stamford Bridge for seven months, but is facing mounting criticism over his style of football – and results – after the Blues dropped to sixth in the table.

Here, Rory Jennings of CFC FANTV, explains why Sarri must be sacked immediately.

Maurizio Sarri is under huge pressure at Chelsea after Sunday’s 6-0 defeat by Manchester City

Hellas Verona, Sorrento, Empoli – just a few of the powerhouses of Italian football that Maurizio Sarri managed before his huge and overwhelming success at Napoli.

In that period of ‘success’ he won precisely niente but valiantly finished second in the league, as if that is some sort of achievement.

A managerial career of 30 years and not a single trophy in the cabinet, yet somehow our board have decided he is the man to follow in the footsteps of Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

Sarri arrived and our board actually bucked the trend. Where we wouldn’t back proven winners such as those previously mentioned, we did everything to make sure that Sarri had all the key ingredients for ‘Sarriball.’ We’ll be coming back to that later.

Chelsea’s players look dejected during their nightmare afternoon at the Etihad on Sunday

We signed Jorginho, his beloved midfielder from his former club, a player without whom Sarriball will never work.

We signed Mateo Kovacic, a three-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid who spends the majority of his time on our bench watching Ross Barkley try to master the concept of football.

Then, in the winter window, Sarri decides that the £60million man Alvaro Morata is a waste of space (even a broken clock is right twice a day) and we signed Gonzalo Higuain, a man who had the best spell of his career under Sarri at Napoli.

Sarri was widely regarded as a success at Napoli but he still failed to win a trophy in Italy

Higuain was the final piece of the jigsaw, Sarriball was to ensue and didn’t it just! We stuck five on Huddersfield, the worst Premier League side to ever visit Stamford Bridge.

We don’t need to go into the specifics of what happened at the Etihad Stadium, everyone knows. What is more interesting is that for vast swathes of Chelsea fans, myself included, this came as no surprise.

We are rubbish. We are tactically inept and out-thought on the touchline on a weekly basis.

Bournemouth was our worst defeat in 24 years. Sunday’s loss was our biggest defeat for 27 years. We have lost our last four away games without scoring – the last time that happened was in 1981.

Sarri may not know much about winning trophies but he certainly knows how to get his name in the history books.

Chelsea also suffered an embarrassing defeat at Bournemouth, with Josh King scoring twice

Since the turn of the year ‘Sarriball’ has seen our only league points (and goals) in 2019 coming against teams in the bottom four and we didn’t even score against one of them.

In case you are unfamiliar with the phrase, it’s basically a term used by fans of Sarri who don’t ever go to football but think that their opinions are in some way valid or important.

They call give-and-go ‘tiki-taka’, they call a deep lying midfielder, a ‘regista’, and they call impotent, pathetic and boring football being overseen by a 60-year-old bank clerk with nothing to show for a 30-year career in the game, ‘Sarriball.’

There is no doubt the board need to act. For us to have any chance of finishing in the top four, they need to do it now.

Zinedine Zidane is the dream candidate to replace Sarri after his success at Real Madrid

Of the viable candidates, the dream is of course Zinedine Zidane, one of the greatest players to have ever played the game and a man who won three European Cups in a row. I would do anything to get him to Chelsea.

Of the more realistic options, Eddie Howe and Didier Deschamps stand out, but the two problems are actually not linked.

Who we get in is actually irrelevant right now – the priority is simply getting Sarri out.
