The New Zealand shootings are the latest attack by a White ISIS – it’s time we saw the terror on our doorstep

In a world waking up to the murder of 49 people in their church, people worry first about the victims, then the perpetrator, and then the cause.

And inevitably, they get the cause wrong. Close up to death, we lack the perspective of spotting exactly where it came from.

Christchurch is not an isolated incident. In the 21st century, we are all more connected than ever before, and those who perpetrated this massacre appear to have been influenced by events all over the world – a mosque shooting in Quebec, the Austrian paramilitaries who preceded the Nazis, the Rotherham grooming scandal.

They could as easily have Tipp-Exed their ammunition with mainstream political slogans, a URL or #MeToo. The stated inspiration for mass slaughter is always delusional, and those messages were just an attempt to deflect blame for their brutality.

There is no other animal on Earth that does to its own species what the Christchurch killers did to theirs.

Christchurch has joined the same list as Pittsburgh, Utøya, Charlottesville, Paris, Manchester, Oak Creek, Finsbury Park and Birstall – scenes of attacks by what’s perhaps best described as White ISIS.

New York Times writer Wajahat Ali called it first

Like ISIS, the killers are young men groomed online or by charismatic leaders and told their way of life is under attack. They are disaffected misfits who feel shunned by wider society and combine a need to lash out with a desire to be seen as saviours.

Mohammed Emwazi had terrible halitosis and couldn’t get a girlfriend. When he became Jihadi John, everyone stopped caring about his breath and he was given a slave to be his wife. Anders Behring Breivik was a brutalised child who was seeing psychiatrists by the age of 4. After he slaughtered schoolchildren on Utøya, he became a hero for the Far Right who decided he was the voice of sanity.

From the sheet-draped Nazis who marched in Charlottesville to the second-generation migrants who blew up London Tube trains, the convert who weaponised a car at Westminster, and the angry Welshman who mowed down worshippers at Finsbury Park, they are maladjusted losers who despise the world around them.

Black, white, Muslim, Christian, let’s call them what they are: anti-social slimeball haters, or ASSHATs for short.

The aftermath in Christchurch

These ASSHATs hate everything. They hate women, Jews, blacks, Latinos, and a good chunk of their own ethnic or religious group which they consider culpable in their denigration. They might pick one target – the Sikh worshippers at Oak Creek, for example, or a pro-EU MP at the height of a vicious referendum – but they’d happily murder just about anyone.

It’s long been said that perpatrators of such atrocities are called terrorists when people of colour, and lone wolves with a history of mental illness when white. It’s rarely pointed out that linking skin colour to the level of fear it can provoke is exactly what all these ASSHATs want.

But more important is that it is not just this paramilitary wing we see on the evening news. They have outriders in elected mainstream politicians and commentators with rhetoric of migrant invasions, minority birth rates, and cultural pressure. They have troll factories selling stories of Establishment conspiracy, Left-wing cover-ups, and secret liberal agendas.

ISIS had hate preachers. Their white brothers have PewDiePie, Donald Trump, Alternative für Deutschland, and Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

They’ll promote any cause that makes you hate the other guy more

They find vulnerable idiots, validate their grievances, make them feel they belong to a cause, and tell them that despite all appearances to the contrary they’re superior to everyone else. The result is bloodshed and blowback. When nail-bomber David Copeland was arrested for killing 3 and injuring 100, he told police: "My aim was political. It was to cause a racial war in this country. There’d be a backlash from the ethnic minorities, then all the white people will go out and vote BNP."

And just as with Da’esh, White ISIS usually fails.

The murder of Jo Cox horrified the Leave campaign, just as the flag-draped ninnies who hounded Anna Soubry appal ordinary Brexit voters and most Muslims were disgusted by Islamist perversion of the Koran. But while the vast majority of us react to these supremacist killings with the horror of sane people , there will always be one or two fresh recruits to the cause.

For some rectum-dwelling bacteria, causing widespread revulsion is the thing that attracts them.

It gets retweets, right?

Because we don’t say ISIS and White ISIS are the same thing, we don’t treat them the same way. No-one would get elected in the UK on a promise to security-screen Trump supporters before allowing them to land at Heathrow; but UKIP suggested doing exactly that to Muslims in its 2018 manifesto. We don’t pick up on the hints, we don’t crack down on the causes, and we don’t devote the same resources to all the forms of terror that squat on our doorstep.

But these angry, young, brainwashed, befuddled white men are in a death cult, too. In Europe, the USA and New Zealand they can slip under the radar of fair-minded people, who feel safer if they pretend their own beliefs can’t be hijacked.

Islamist terror started out organised and well-financed, and has now splintered into enthused individuals radicalised online. White terror is moving in the opposite direction. Muslims were told to take responsibility for their wrong’uns; it’s about time the white world told itself to do the same.

Because they don’t just attack the other guy. They attack your mother, sister, daughter, the shopkeeper, the taxi driver, your mate, your boss, your thoughts. They’re absolutist, apocalyptic fruitcakes who’ll kill anyone who says they’re wrong, and being white won’t save you.

Sorry, gammons

There is no white supremacy, because we all carry other races in our genes. There is no cultural pressure, because culture wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for fluid cross-fertilisation. And whether they get a lifetime in prison or a bullet in the brain, these fools are no more likely to get a girlfriend at the end of it.

You can call them racists, fascists, nationalists, populists or lunatics. It might make us feel better; it doesn’t do them much harm. But don’t blame Facebook, Muslims or integration. That’s just lazy.

Two things killed ISIS – international action, and calling them Da’esh, a pejorative term that can be roughly translated as ‘bigots’. If we want to stop White ISIS, we need to notice it has the same causes and methodology, the same cultish violence that delivers death to unbelievers, and we need to co-operate with one another to fix the problem.

It would also help if we called them ASSHATs. If for no other reason than that they won’t like it one little bit.
